October 2008 – Law Cooperative founding member David Sharrow dons his professor cap for the month of October as he embarks to New Orleans to teach the second annual offering of his course, Strategic Partnering. Specifically, Mr. Sharrow will be teaching JD and graduate law students at Tulane University Law School a practical introduction to the exploitation of intellectual property rights in the context of complex strategic alliances.
According to Mr. Sharrow, “the course is unique because not only does it incorporate several areas of law that are essential to the structuring and negotiation of strategic alliances, including antitrust, copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret, FDA regulation, UCC and dispute resolution, but it also provides students with hands on experience with drafting and negotiating via simulated exercises in fields such as biotechnology, software and computer technology and media”. Moreover, the course comes on the heels of a recent American Bar Association article noting that law schools do not typically teach practical courses focused on drafting and negotiating contract language.
Legal service to clients during the month of October will continue as customary without interruption. According to Holly Kimball, founding member of Law Cooperative, “Law Cooperative was founded on the premise of geographic diverse locations housed under a virtual technological and administrative ‘roof’. Hence, this virtual format makes client service seamless irrespective of geographic location.” During October, clients will be serviced out of both the Massachusetts office and the temporary New Orleans location, with no change in client contact, from telephone to email, nor differences in client response times.
Core to Law Cooperative is a commitment to give something back to the community at large, including legal education. Members believe that mentoring future and junior attorneys is something all senior attorneys should actively pursue so as to promote lawyers who are highly competent, with strong integrity and a passion for the law. Moreover, according to Mr. Sharrow, “my law partner, Holly Kimball and I, truly find IP to be one of the most fascinating, dynamic and evolving legal disciplines, so if my course can inspire a future attorney to enter intellectual property transactional law, I would be delighted.”

Press Release April 2008
April 2008 – Founding members of Law Cooperative LLC announce the launch of their Northeast office, which follows the firm's roots of being a new kind of law firm, a virtual law firm, dubbed “the law firm evolved”. Law Cooperative's Northeast office is co-founded by the synergies of David Sharrow and Holly Kimball who merged their complimentary, but unique, backgrounds to form the firm. David Sharrow is a former partner from Gunderson Dettmer Stough Villeneuve Franklin & Hachigian, LLP where he founded and headed their East Coast Technology Practice Group. Holly Kimball is former Director, Corporate Counsel over Sentillion Inc., a Massachusetts, venture-backed software company.
Law Cooperative specializes in assisting emerging growth, private and public companies in the areas of U.S. and international corporate partnering; strategic alliances; joint ventures and spin-offs; technology acquisition and licensing; intellectual property strategy, counseling, protection and commercialization; as well as assisting with the intellectual property and technology aspects of venture capital financings, public offerings and acquisitions. With many years of experience, firm members have expertise with a broad array of technologies, including information technology, hardware, software, communications, e-commerce, internet, wireless, media, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, semiconductors, nanotechnology and photonics.
According to its founders, the catalyst for the firm and its inital roots came out of their individual experiences in post-Katrina New Orleans. The members saw a need to combine their expertise in the legal profession with their desire to give something back to the community at large. Hence, the firm has a dedicated outreach practice geared toward energy, environmental and intellectual property law. In fact, such pro bono practice area formed the original seeds of Law Cooperative itself.
The long-term vision of Law Cooperative is to bring together other similarly-minded solo practitioners and groups of attorneys with other areas of expertise and in geographic diverse locations under a virtual technological and administrative “roof” thereby putting the firm’s slogan “the law firm evolved” into practice. The virtual format makes this possible and allows members to give clients premier service irrespective of geographic location.
